Description

Build a Tacoma that wheels harder and drives nicer. The 74Weld Gen 2 Portal Axle Kit raises the axles—not just the body—delivering real undercarriage clearance, a 1.22:1 hub reduction (22%), and an approx. 3.88" lift from the axle centerline. That means you can run 35–37" tires with far less stress on the driveline, while keeping near-OEM ride quality, CV angles, and steering feel.

Conventional lifts push suspension geometry out of spec. Portals lift the axles themselves, protecting diffs, arms, and steering from trail hits—exactly why Ultra4 and desert racers trust 74Weld.

Why portals on a 2nd/3rd-gen Tacoma

  • True ground clearance: Axle-centerline gain moves the vulnerable bits higher off the rocks, ruts, and ledges.

  • 22% torque multiplication at the hub: Offsets larger tire diameter, often avoiding a diff re-gear and easing drivetrain load.

  • Keep OEM manners: Flatter control arms and tie-rod angles at ride height help preserve predictable on-road handling.

  • Race-grade construction: Billet 7075 knuckles (steel inserts) and billet 6061 portal boxes built for abuse.

  • Brake upgrade + ABS: Larger front calipers/rotors and a rear caliper with integrated parking brake, with factory ABS compatibility.

  • Stable stance: +3.5" per side track width (≈ +7" overall) improves stability with optimized scrub using stock suspension components.

  • Rear end, upgraded: Converts the Tacoma’s rear semi-float to a full-float for better load handling and durability.

Vehicle compatibility

  • Toyota Tacoma 2005–2023
    (2nd Gen 2005–2015, 3rd Gen 2016–2023)

Sway bar note: If your setup uses a front sway bar, relocation or removal may be required depending on configuration. Contact us for Tacoma-specific guidance.

Wheel & tire guidance

  • 35–37" tires are commonly achievable; final fitment depends on wheel specs, bumpers, alignment, and trimming.

  • Verify caliper/rotor clearance with your wheels, and plan offset/backspacing around the +3.5" per side increase. We’re happy to spec a proven combo.

FAQs

Do I still need to re-gear?
Often no. The 22% hub reduction offsets the effective ratio change from larger tires, letting many owners run 35–37" without opening the diffs. Driving style, load, and tire size ultimately decide.

How are portals different from a suspension lift?
Suspension lifts raise the chassis but keep the axles at the same height, often worsening CV and steering angles. Portals raise the axles, giving real clearance under diffs/arms while preserving geometry.

Will ABS and traction systems still work?
Yes—the kit is factory ABS compatible. Verify system operation post-install; initialization/recalibration may be recommended.

What happens to the rear axle?
This kit converts the rear to full-float using 4340 heat-treated shafts for superior load capacity and durability.
