Description

Turn your FJ into a clearance monster that still drives great on pavement. The 74Weld Gen 2 Portal Axle Kit raises your axles—not just the body—delivering true underbody clearance, a 1.22:1 hub reduction (22%), and an approx. 3.88" lift from the axle centerline. Run 35–37" tires with far less driveline strain while keeping confident on-road manners, near-OEM CV angles, and precise steering feel.

Conventional lifts move geometry out of spec. Portals lift the axles themselves, pushing diffs, arms, and steering up and away from trail hazards—exactly why Ultra4 and trophy-truck teams trust 74Weld.

Why portals on an FJ Cruiser

  • Real ground clearance: Axle-centerline gain protects the most vulnerable components on rocks, ruts, and ledges.

  • 22% torque multiplication at the hub: Offsets larger tire diameter, often avoiding a diff re-gear and easing drivetrain load.

  • Keep OEM manners: Flatter control-arm and tie-rod angles at ride height help preserve the FJ’s composed on-road behavior.

  • Race-grade construction: Billet 7075 knuckles (steel inserts) and billet 6061 portal boxes—precision-machined to take abuse.

  • Brake upgrade + ABS: Larger front calipers/rotors and a rear caliper with integrated parking brake, with factory ABS compatibility.

  • Stability built-in: +3.5" per side (≈ +7" overall) improves stance and scrub characteristics while retaining stock suspension components.

  • Rear axle, perfected: Converts the FJ’s rear semi-float to a full-float for better load handling and durability.

Vehicle compatibility

Sway bar note: Not compatible with the factory front sway bar location. The sway bar must be removed or relocated (relocation recommended for on-road manners). Ask us about proven FJ solutions.

FAQs

Do I still need to re-gear?
Often no. The 22% hub reduction offsets the effective ratio change from larger tires, letting many owners run 35–37" without opening the diffs. Payload, terrain, and tire size ultimately decide.

How are portals different from a suspension lift?
Suspension lifts raise the chassis but keep axles at the same height, which can worsen CV/steering angles. Portals raise the axles, delivering real clearance under diffs/arms while preserving geometry.

Will ABS, traction control, and parking brake still work?
Yes—the kit is factory ABS compatible and includes a rear caliper with an integrated parking brake. Verify system operation post-install; initialization/recalibration may be recommended.
